About the Course

With the rise of podcasting and other technology, the popularity of audio storytelling – as well as longform storytelling – has increased dramatically in recent years. The goal of this course is to produce an engaging narrative audio series that educates and entertains its audience on a topical issue related to the University of Iowa, or a forgotten or untold story from the university’s rich history. Students will examine the elements that contribute to a compelling series and learn the fundamentals of audio storytelling from pre-production through post-production.

From Title IX to Today: Her Hawkeye History

Kathy Wachel calls herself a troublemaker. In 1970, she was a professional librarian required to wear a skirt to her job at The University of Iowa Library. Wachel wrote a petition with 80 signatures protesting the unfair standards placed on women. The next year, the administration got rid of the dress code. Wachel and artist Elizabeth Catlett are two of many women trailblazers at Iowa who paved the way for future female Hawkeyes. "Her Hawkeye History" reflects on the legacy of Hawkeye trailblazers who have advanced women’s rights on campus.
